Playing any supported video file from applications like WhatsApp etc is absolutely safe. Popular applications like Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp etc will never support unsafe file formats. Having said that please remember that when you click any link and move to websites outside the application then you need to be extremely cautious about what you install or click.
