The claim that clapping destroy the virus is false

COVID-19 is a new strain of coronavirus infection. Details are being studied about it by researches and specialists. So arriving at a concrete conclusion is difficult at this point.

PM Modi clearly said that the clapping at 5 pm is to express gratitude towards the emergency staff working selflessly to counter #coronavirusinindia #Covid19India. There is no mention that clapping kills any kind of virus. Few people have made up stories in various languages out of it and are sharing on social media with false claims. Clapping, Conch, Bells are to pay gratitude towards the people working day and night in their respective fields to reduce the stress of the global pandemic. Social distancing, to some extent, help reduced interaction and infection.

PM Modi said, ” for the past two months, millions are working day and night in hospitals and airports. On March 22 at 5 pm, we should stand on our doorways, balconies and keep clapping and ringing bells for five minutes to salute and encourage them.”

The claims on the  survival span of the virus is  generalised. Though the findings of the resent study on coronavirus are that it can survive in air for hours and 2-3 days on some surface.

The World Health Organisation says that “it is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment).”
