According to Sheela Bhatt, she first met Dawood when he was just emerging as a small-time criminal in 1981-82. The initial encounter led to a phone call from Dawood, requesting her to write about the alleged harassment of girls in a government remand home by Karim Lala’s men. The first meeting took place at Tanker Street near Jail Road in Mumbai.
